Yoast SEO — the historical reference
Yoast is the best-known SEO plugin in the WordPress world. Solid, heavily documented, with a recognized content-analysis engine and a mature ecosystem (Google Search Console integration, structured data, breadcrumbs, sitemaps). It is the default pick for millions of sites.
Rank Math — the ambitious challenger
Rank Math arrived later with a clear strategy: ship for free what Yoast charges for in Premium (multiple keywords, advanced schemas, redirects, 404 monitor). Modern UI, fast configuration, and a module-by-module architecture that lets you turn off what you do not use.
The performance verdict
Rank Math has a structural advantage: its modular architecture lets you cut features you do not use (Local SEO, WooCommerce SEO, AMP…), so less code loaded, fewer SQL queries, less memory. Yoast loads more by default. On a standard site, the Footprint Score gap is real but not dramatic. On a site that pushes features hard, the gap widens in Rank Math's favor. Note that both plugins weigh mainly on the admin side — much less on the public pages.
Pick Yoast SEO if
You need maturity, ecosystem, and professional integrations (especially the content analysis aimed at non-SEO writers). The Yoast brand reassures agency clients. If pure SEO-plugin performance is not your top priority and you are already paying for Yoast Premium, stay where you are.

You are starting a new site, or you are willing to migrate. You want a lighter plugin you can tune precisely: only the modules you need stay enabled. You also get Premium-tier features for free (multi-keywords, extended schemas). The features-to-footprint ratio is better.

Activate only one SEO plugin. Yoast + Rank Math at the same time write the same tags twice and silently conflict on sitemaps.
Disable unused modules. Local SEO, WooCommerce SEO, AMP, redirects — if you do not use them, they ship code for nothing.
Be wary of real-time content analysis. It helps writers but slows Gutenberg down on long posts.
SEO is 90 % content and site structure, 10 % plugin settings. An A-grade SEO plugin will not save a poorly designed site.
