WPForms vs Contact Form 7
Contact Form 7 has been on WordPress since 2007 and is still the most-installed form plugin. WPForms is more recent, more modern, more ergonomic — and more monetized. The real question: does their respective footprint justify either one?

WPForms Lite — the modern form builder
WPForms shipped with a clear bias: build a drag-and-drop form constructor that is genuinely accessible, with a free Lite version sufficient for a basic contact form. Pre-built templates, real-time validation, email-marketing integrations in the Pro version. Very clean UI.
Contact Form 7 — the historical minimalist
Contact Form 7 is free, has no Premium version, and does one thing: render a form from shortcode text. No drag-and-drop, configuration through a small tag language. Maintained by Takayuki Miyoshi for nearly twenty years, it is the most minimalist actively-used form plugin on WordPress.
The performance verdict
The result often surprises: by default, Contact Form 7 loads its scripts and CSS on every page of the site, including pages with no form. So its measured footprint isn't as minimal as its UI suggests. WPForms Lite, by contrast, only loads its assets on pages that actually contain a form. On a standard site with a single form on /contact, WPForms Lite wins clearly. On a site with forms everywhere, the gap closes. The nuance matters: configuring Contact Form 7 properly (constant `WPCF7_LOAD_JS = false` + conditional loading) makes it very light — but that is not the default.

You want a modern form without touching code. Drag-and-drop saves time for non-developers, the templates cover 90 % of cases (contact, quote, signup), and conditional asset loading is good performance hygiene by default. If you pay for Pro, you also get integrated email marketing.

You know what you are doing and you want the most minimalist possible. With two or three constants in wp-config.php plus a tiny add-on like Flamingo (same author) to store submissions, you get an ultra-light setup. But out of the box, the defaults are not optimal.

Prefer conditional script loading. WPForms does it by default. Contact Form 7 requires `define('WPCF7_LOAD_JS', false)` in wp-config.php and re-enabling on form pages manually.
Do not stack form plugins. Adding Gravity Forms or Forminator on top of either of these means loading two frameworks for redundant work.
Watch out for built-in anti-spam modules (reCAPTCHA, hCaptcha). They add a third-party script on the page, sometimes site-wide. Honeypot or Cloudflare Turnstile are lighter alternatives.
A form should not be a Frankenstein. Five well-thought-out fields convert better than a 25-field monster. They also cost less performance.
